Weather wins at Gurteen Bay
A large entry had been expected for the Roundstone Windsurfing Slalom at Gurteen Bay over the October Bank Holiday weekend. Unfortunately, the arrival of Storm Boelo brought severe winds and difficult conditions, forcing the organised racing to be postponed in the interests of safety.
It was a disappointing outcome for the organisers, competitors and spectators who had been looking forward to one of the final highlights of the Irish windsurfing season. With Roundstone’s Atlantic setting and Connemara scenery, the event always brings a wonderful sense of energy to the area.
The enthusiasm was still there
Even without the official competition, a number of windsurfers were keen to get onto the water and practise when conditions allowed. Their colourful sails against the Connemara coastline were a reminder of why Roundstone is such a special place for watersports.
We look forward to welcoming the windsurfers back to Roundstone and Connemara for a future event—and hopefully to calmer, safer weather for the racing next time.
